Scalzi’s War Fights On

  October 1, 2007

Cover of Zoe’s Tale

It’s official. John Scalzi is currently working on Zoe’s Tale, the fourth book that will be set in the “Old Man’s War” universe. Zoe is the adopted daughter of John Perry and Jane Sagan, the protagonists in the previous three books “Old Man’s War”, “The Ghost Brigades”, and “The Last Colony”.

I’m pleasantly surprised that he has gotten back to this universe so soon. In the acknowledgments at the end of “The Last Colony” (which was published this year) he states:

With this book we’ve reached the end of our journeys with John Perry and Jane Sagan. I like to think they go on. But they go on without us. It’s possible I’ll return one day to this universe, to explore other corners of it, and to see how it has changed through the events of this book. For the moment, however, I’m stepping back, to explore other places and people. It hope you don’t mind.

Because of that quote I expected it to be several more years before anymore came out.

Maguire to produce live action Robotech movie

  September 8, 2007

I really don’t know how I feel about this. Apparently Warner Bros. has purchased the rights to Robotech. Tobey Maguire’s production company has signed on. Craig Zahler is writing the script.

So, on one hand, we have the exciting news that somebody might be producing a live action Robotech film.

Then, on the other hand, it’s being produced by Spider-Man and this would be the screenwriter’s second film.

Actually, the most dispiriting thing about this whole situation is this quote by Maguire:

“We are very excited to bring ‘Robotech’ to the big screen,” Maguire said. “There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film.”

Maybe it’s just the pessimist in me. But I can’t imagine that the codewords “mythology” and “foundation” imply anything other than plans to completely screw up everything.

Reaper Premiers in 23 Days!

  • Torchwood - “Everything Changes” Series Premier! During the course of an investigation police constable Gwen Cooper comes across a mysterious organization, introduced in Doctor Who, called Torchwood. Torchwood fights aliens and steals their technology. The show tends to be very sexual, so it’s kind of like an adult version of MIB/X-Files/Doctor Who.
