Sorry … the news format is getting kinda/sorta boring. Maybe it’s me b/c I think the segments blend together. Maybe a co-anchor? I don’t know. When I did radio is college, I would record segments in other voices so that it seemed like it was a much bigger production. I’m a geek. And, good Lord, the fact-checking … the fact-checking!

Love the music beds for the commercials, for what it’s worth.

You know, what would be NEATO KEEN would be an audio-documentary put together by the staff on the subject of collecting (why do you do it, what do you have, etc.). It would be an awesome listen. Why not solicit audio files from the listeners/fans, cobble it together, set it to music, and have a dedicated release? Honestly, that could be a magical listen.

I’ve always thought collecting — more than anything else — is an expression of individuality WITHIN the community. Everyone wants to belong to something, and belonging to a specific fanbase can be tremendously rewarding … but getting the chance to express yourself within that community by collecting all of the DVDs, collecting all of the action figures, collecting the props, collecting the autographs, etc. is a way to show how you (personally) fit inside this particular fan group. Showing up to a convention dressed as a Jedi is one thing; showing up to a convention dressed in one of the costumes worn by the actor decked out as Plo Koon (sp?) is a wonderful expression of the individual, despite what a psychologist/psychiatrist/analyst/therapist/bitter-spouse might try to tell you.

Yes, TOYS WERE MEANT TO BE PLAYED WITH, not just articles expressing jaded American consumerism. Damn straight: you open those packages.

Don’t freeze the potato! Once you try to thaw it, it’ll really be soggy.

Tip: put PUSHING DAISIES up on the SciFi Surplus Amazon.com store, and I’ll buy it that way.

Casey: give up the argument on TRUE BLOOD. The romance angle is a very small component of a highly-creepy, highly-entertaining show. I will say that I was very unimpressed with the premiere episode, but I found the 2nd episode far superior. If I were an HBO executive, I would’ve had them repackage the first episode alongside the 2nd episode and made it a two-hour pilot movie premiere.

KNIGHT RIDER: Like Kirk said, “Let them die.”

Also, I do love the A-Team. I always wondered where Mr. T kept his blow torch, though - I suspected he kept it buried within his chains. I think that show is what left me with a fondness for the show Junkyard Wars, too.

    Hey guys,

I have a few comments about collecting. Let me preface this by saying that I don’t have anything against collectors or against enthusiastic storm toopers at Cons, but I do think we should pay more attention to what we’re doing. I also agree that toys should be played with and should be for kids, even if those kids are 30.

One, does it say something about western society that individuals need to feel connected to a community or ‘verse’ by owning objects? Is there some reason we can’t feel connected to each other without conspicuous consumption?
Two, trying to recapture your youth through collecting does not sound particularly healthy. Maybe if we all grew up, we would have more time to devote to better things..like listening to digital (environmentally friendly) podcasts like you guys.
Three, advocating the purchasing of cheap plastic crap is horrible for the environment, both in the production and eventual disposal.
Four, should we be supporting a system where Chinese workers toil all day for a 1$ to make kitch for us to get at fast food restaurants or out of cereal boxes.
Lastly, If a Porche is simply a penis extention, what the heck is a light sabre saying about you.

Knight rider is an insult to the viewing audience

True Blood is worth the money but if you don’t want to pay for HBO, downloading is always an option.

Cudos on mentioning the viewers in this podcast..you might consider putting a few voice messages in once in a while too.

    ^^

Nicole, I couldn’t agree more: what self-respecting podcast DOESN’T give a shout out to both listeners and board participants? Well, SciFi Surplus doesn’t! That’s who! I’ve been after them for awhile, but, alas, ‘t’wasn’t meant to be.

FYI: A Porche is NOT a penis extension (sp?). It’s a penis AMPLIFIER. There’a a big difference.

FYI: The one world government is secretly co-opting our thoughts by making us feel and act on the need to ‘collect.’ It’s all part of their plot, and we’re each only one more purchased Count Dooku away from losing our 2nd Amendment rights.

  5. Nicole Says:

    Hi Edward,
Thanks for the into on the ‘penis’ amplifier. I stand corrected….I’m still worried about the whole light sabre aspect.
I’m actually not convinced that the various governments around the world aren’t trying to get us to ‘collect’ just to keep the world economy going…it would certainly explain light sabre pens and spoons because nothing else I come up with can.

  6. Edward Lee Says:

^^ No problem, Nicole! Glad I could help!
