SciFi Surplus Podcast #038 Council
May 7, 2008
Thank you for listening to us this is show number 38. On the way we’re talking lot’s of Iron Man and new Marvel movies. Lex is leaving Smallville and we’ll find out who’s going to fill the evil void. There’s also news from Terminator and syndication information for the SciFi Channel. It’s time to move on to the semi-final round 3 of the SciFi 16. It’s now time to get our geek on!
NOTE: This episode has been edited for content and the audio has been replaced. If you have the old “explicit” copy and you don’t want it, please re-download.
We’ll bring the council to order by introducing everyone:
Stephanie: Mistress of Trekker Malcontents
Jeromy: Exo-representative of the X-Files
Vince: Giant Mechanoid Hugger
Casey: Blu-Ray Sellout

GTA IV probably did a fair amount of damage to Iron Man’s sales. GTA IV moved about 4 Million copies over the weekend in the US alone.

Hey, I’m glad SciFi is going to be showing Star Trek:TNG. I want more SciFi and less teeny-bopper, fantasy operas like Smallville, Charmed, Buffy, etc.
How about as a council topic discussing the state of the SciFi channel. For us here in the states it should be our go to network but instead it’s craptacular fare like Mansquito, wrestling and (shudder) Caprica.

Not to mention “The Most Dangerous Night on Television.” That always makes me laugh. All those really bad movies they pay for.

1) Casino Royale is NOT a great movie, or even a great Bond movie.
I hear from my daughter that Enchanted was really good. Have you guys putting it down seen it? If you haven’t then you shouldn’t put it down.
Also, Mission Impossible 3 sucked (well, it was OKAY at best) and Independance Day was only great as a so-bad-it’s-good type thing. But if a computer’s going to save humanity, it’s going to be a MAC.
2)Dr. Virginia Knot- THAT’s what Stephany’s Halloween costume should be. Photos!
3) Vince, if you step out of your Mom’s basement and into the light, ask a non comic book fan (which is most of humanity) to tell you Iron Man’s origin, they can’t. It is not a part of popular culture.
4) Specials about Superman, Batman, Harry Potter, the Sci Fi Channel, etc are a GREAT idea, but I have some suggestions to make them really great-
a) they should be standalone specials, perhaps with extra content like sound clips, etc.
b) you should bring in a guest expert in each subject.
c) time these to come out during a “tentpole” event- like the upcoming Batman movie (get crankin’!).
5) I know you’ve met him, Casey, and I haven’t, but nonetheless, ADAM WEST IS AWESOME. Also, Hitchcock is SO a genius and everyone loves Stan Lee. C’Mon.
6) Lex’s replacement on “Smallville”- how about Ursa/Mala/Faora, the man-hating girl soldier of General Zod. That makes most sense.
Also there’s Aethyr, the spirit of the Phantom Zone, who was actually on the show before.
I wish it could be one of Darkseid’s minions, but that would mean he’d be Lex’s replacement and not Doomsday.
And what’s up with picking Doomsday, the guy who killed Superman? Calrk hasn’t even BEEN Superman yet! I hope they’re not going to do “The Death of Superman”, because 1) it sucked and 2) they kind of already did it on Smallville.
7) Stephanie, Chim Chim is a main character in the cartoon- it wouldn’t be a faithful recreation without him.
You want to see a franchise marred by crap marketing, just wait for “Speed Racer the Next Generation” from Nicktoons Network. The chimp is a ROBOT that transforms into a SCOOTER. I’m serious.
9) Cylon babies- you’ve all forgotten, but Sharon’s baby got sick on the Basestar and was rescued and brought back to Galactica. No mention has been made of the fact that Terl’s baby is half Cylon. I beieve the whole Cylon/Human baby plotline has been abandoned because it was going nowhere and the producers hope we will all forget about them. Either that or one of the babies is the final unrevealed Cylon? Naa- that’s stupid.
10) Joss Whedon vs. Trek. You’ve got to be kidding. Let’s see if millions of people are still talking about Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly 40 years from now. ‘Nuff said.

*g* Thanks John for setting me straight about the Trek stuff! I AM ashamed! I’m afraid that I haven’t rewatched the episodes in a long time- maybe this is a sign that I need to get them out (or watch them on Sci-Fi!)
I have to agree to disagree about Casino Royale…at least about it being good. I can see your point about it not being “Bond”- as I said in the episode, I really miss the over-the-top camp, but I did LOVE the film.
That said, I also LOVED Enchanted…and I like giving Vince hell.
Thanks for your feedback! I really appreciate all the detail that you went in to. It is good to know that someone is listening (even though I screwed up!).
May 9th, 2008 at 6:01 am
You didn’t screw up- you’re just not some crazed old Trekkie who grew up in a time when the only Trek was 79 episodes that you’d watch over and over and over…
We’re a dying breed. That’s why nobody but me seems to mind this new movie replacing our heroes with twentysomething imposters.
I didn’t say Casino Royale wasn’t Bond, it’s just not Great. Still, there was something about the Bond movies that distinguished them from all other spy flicks that they chucked in favor of a more “realistic” Bond. Yeah, that’s what I go to a Bond movie to see- realism.
Thank YOU for the feedback- and the podcast!

I will be unsubscribing from the podcast. I’m a big scifi and fantasy fan. Always interested in news and discussion. However, when I have to be careful that my 6 year old is no where in ear shot when I listen to the podcast then I’ll find other sources for my news. It’s pretty sad to see people who love profanity so much they can’t manage to be professional enough to make it through a half hour or hour long podcast without using it. Maybe this will draw otehr subscribers for you, but you lost this one.
May 9th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Hey Robert give ‘em a chance before you leave. Personally, I don’t mind the profanity and find it humorous. However, adding profanity might slightly limit the all-inclusive vibe that you all have going.
Perhaps the regular show should be profanity free and the council show could be a No Holds Barred cavalcade of curmudgeonly cursing.

“You didn’t screw up- you’re just not some crazed old Trekkie who grew up in a time when the only Trek was 79 episodes that you’d watch over and over and over…”
That was when men were men, aliens were aliens and women wore hot mini-skirts. WWKD “What would Kirk do?” a question to ask oneself before any undertaking.

Thank you, everyone for commenting here.
We really do like the feedback. John, you are very thorough about making your points. Nice work. As for the issue of explicit language, it’s never been our intention to just start swearing for the sake of it. In this episode, It was completely my fault and I let it get way out of hand. The reason I let it stay was because of the discussion that ensued. I am going to get everyone’s feedback that is associated with the show because I have to make a policy decision on this issue. I have to point out that I am dissatisfied with how the “Explicit” tag is handled at iTunes. There doesn’t seem to be a way to tag a single episode. I’m not an ID3/RSS expert so I’m not certain if there is a solution to this. One idea that I had was to pull explicit conversations out and put them up on a second feed that is reserved for “off-color” conversations or “unrated” bonus features or something. Please feel free to comment on this. I would like as much input on this as I can get.

Hey, John Hazard:
Like you, I grew up watching those TOS episodes over and over. So I thought I’d log in and give a plug to Star Trek Phase II (nee New Voyages). It’s been talked about on the show before, I think. Anyway, you can check out the wikipedia page about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Voyages
Link to the site (and the excellent videos) is at the bottom somewhere.

Here is an update on the “explicit” issue. I’ve edited this episode and replaced the audio on the server so anyone who downloads it from this point on will be given beeps instead of swear words. I’ve also remastered the audio so it sounds a bit better as well.

I like a clean show as well, but I do think that if profanity is to be used, it should be used carefully and sparingly to really put an emphasis on something. I don’t swear much in real life and every time I do I get a very “WOW, did she really say that?!” reaction when I do and I think that that’s how swearing should be used if at all. But, I’m all for a clean show
Also, I saw Iron Man yesterday and it blew my mind. Best superhero movie I’ve seen and I didn’t know anything about Iron Man before so I had no idea who was going to be the bad guy or what was going to happen, other than what the trailer revealed.
As for the cool mothers (apart from my own mother, that is
… Kitty from the 70’s Show and Clair Huxtable from the Cosby show. I know they’re not from sci-fi but those came to my mind. But yeah, Mom from Futurama and my all time favorite is Beverly Crusher from TNG.

Thanks for the input.
Iron man was great!

Hey, Mark- thanks for the recommendation, but I am SO into Trek fanfilms, including New Voyages, a.k.a. Phase II. I look forward to new installments of New Voyages, Farragut, Exeter, etc. way more than anything Paramount’s going to come out with.
As for the “explicit” issue, I think intelligent, civilized adults should be able to express themselves without foul language. You’ve been doing it without a problem before this, and cutting the cursewords opens up the podcast to more people.
Btw, my daughter and I saw Iron Man today, and it was PERFECT. I liked it way better than Batman Begins. Maybe the best superhero movie ever (besides the Christopher Reeve Superman, which was MAGIC)!

Just a note on the “Explicit” thing. While I don’t mind the swearing, I think you should keep it out of the show. Specifically for people like Robert who listen with their kids. You have to remember, not only are you informing current Sci-Fi geeks, you’re educating the next generation of geeks.

I too like to listen to the podcast in the car with the family. I vote no bad language. Love the program.
Just a few other general comments. I consider myself a big scifi fan but I think there are very few people who know every part of scifi. I love the discussions about the history of comic book characters for example because I have never read comic books. I would also like to see more coverage of scifi books. Maybe a weekly book review from a reader or something. The best scifi I have ever seen has never made it to the screen and I am always looking for new great reading material.

Good comments people.

Hello all,
About the question should we allow ‘natural’ language and use the “Explicit” tag.
Hell dam yes…. It is a more authentic conversation.
For the young ones maybe we can keep the weekly round up “Clean” while the Council is all allowed to be a free exchange of ideas and all the goodness of uncensored, unrestrained conversation.
Darren
PS. Whatever happened to surplus 1?
May 14th, 2008 at 11:04 am
Darren, thanks for your comments. Surplus One is currently undergoing a “rethink.” I hope it can be revived soon.
May 14th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
On the “explicit” thing…
Not a fan of censorship. Even self censorship. I like Darren’s idea of keeping the weekly show clean and allowing free ideas to flow during the council however they present themselves (filthy or otherwise).
I understand the thoughts of those above… having kids and whatnot… and maybe a compromise is in order.
But… a “free exchange of ideas” is why the council exists. Yes?

And I’m not a fan of the whole “not swearing = censorship” thesis.
I know it’s in vogue, but c’mon–whatever happened to common courtesy? I can cuss like a proverbial sailor when I want to, but I hold back when speaking in public because I know there are some people who find such language offensive, even if I don’t.
“The greatest good for the greatest number”, as the Vulcans say–if a sizeable minority of people are offended or otherwise put off by explicit language, and the rest of us can live without it, I say keep it clean.

Not implying there is a Naziesque totalitarian regime at work here. I simply want to hear what these guys think… unabridged.
But… point taken. You are probably right.
