SciFi Surplus Podcast #026 Council
March 26, 2008
Thank you for taking time to spend with us. This is show number 26 and we’re going to cover a number of topics. We’ll run down the Hugo nominations, speculate on a Buffy spin-off, talk about the Get Smart movie trailer, as well as a long list of things. The big issue today is drinks and drunks in Speculative fiction and we will get to that in just a bit.

My suggestions for the franchise list:
- X-Files (which also includes the games, comicbooks, etc. and spin-offs like shortly lived Lone Gunmen and Millennium and of course the movies)
- Stargate (Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Stargate movie feature film and tv-movie…)
And don’t knock Xena! It’s cheesy, but fun cheese

Just for the record - I did NOT write a macro to vote for the Spike Show on http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/ - there are just a lot of people that agree with me.

Casey,
How about assigning each slot (1 through 16) a point value?
So for example the first place slot would be worth 16pts, 2 place 15pts, and on down to 1pt for slot #16.
So then if Star Trek is ranked #1 on one list it gets 16 points towards its total, but is ranked 16th place on someone else’s list it will get one point towards it’s total.
So then whatever franchises have the 16 highest total point totals will be the Sweet 16. This will give everyone a chance to enter their favorites and if that favorite is on enough lists it should make it!
Just a thought.

Casey - you’ve got to give Vince’s idea about conducting the playoffs in the Sweet 16 another thought after dismissing it so easily. Using a 20-sided die to roll for the winner with the polls determining winning rolls was brilliant. It gives the long shot a chance - regardless of how slim. That’s the beauty of the tournament. Anyone can win!

Elisa: Thank you for your input.
I also appreciated your voicemail.
Jenica: I don’t believe you for a second.
Cog: That is very close to what we are thinking.
Adam: I am actually, the die rolls biggest proponent now. I like the idea. I’m also working out some really cool ways to cheat for who I like using a DM screen. (sarc)

Man I have only met one other person that knew what a kline bottle was. No a true kline bottle cannot exist. At least my mathmatician friend who told me about that told me it can’t. I hate math!
I agree with Casey about Hercules and Zena. There has to be about 100 better franchises!
Vince I don’t even know what the hell those two franchises are! Sorry man!

I haven’t finished the show yet but if it is not included, Spider Robinson’s Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon books should most definitely be in there. The first part of the series is centered around a bar in Long Island called Callahan’s Place, then shifting to a brothel/bar in NYC two of the books (including Lady Slings the Booze) and then shifting to a replacement bar just called The Place. The mythos behind it is very fun and many a fan has tried long and hard to find a real Callahan’s Place. I highly recommend reading the books or at the very least, reading up on them on wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Callahan%27s_Place
