Fine Art Meets Sci-Fi at Bennett Robot Works.

  December 12, 2007

It’s not so often that science fiction and fine art cross paths. When they do, it’s often for magazines and books in the form of cover art. Sometimes I think that’s for the best because, trust me: as you get older, it gets harder and harder to explain or justify that giant print of a green-skinned Orion woman straddling a laser canon. That’s art, but it isn’t fine art.

Enter Gordon Bennett of Bennett Robot Works. Using old parts he finds in garbage dumps, construction sites, and other odd locations, Bennett sculpts robots reminiscent of Robby the Robot and, well, Robot. (You know, Robot. The B-9 Environmental Control Robot. From “Lost in Space?” I never said they had very inventive names back then.) The sculptures stand between 14 inches and 23 inches tall, but they don’t have moving parts. Each one takes over a month to build.

These are gorgeous. Each piece, with its solid lines and subdued color instantly captures the look of vintage sci-fi. The parts that make up the robots have distinct marks and flaws that reflect their age and keep the robots visually interesting. As a result, each robot offers what all fine art should: something new for the eye to latch on to at every glance.

Bennett Robot Works robots aren’t for the casual collector: prices range from $1000 to $4500. For the frugal among you, the site does offer an attractive poster for $50—a very respectable expression of your love and respect for sci-fi, if I do say so myself. So maybe it’s time to retire the busty Orion after all, eh?

Those are way cool. I’ve always thought it’d be cool to build those. That is great artwork! Sculpting at a whole new level.
