Don’t forget the classic books and series like Dune, one of my personal favorites. There is also an excellent extension of Asimov’s Foundation series done by David Brin, Greg Bear and Gregory Benford.
And I agree that the Thrawn books are some of the best in the Star Wars extended universe.
