SciFi Surplus is against SOPA

There is a bill making its way through the US legislature that could break the Internet. It is an over-reaching piece of legislation that gives too much power to corporate copyright holders. They could be allowed to take down websites at the DNS level without due process. Proponents of the bill and of the PIPA bill say this is to fight copyright infringement from abroad.

Casey is encouraging everyone to steal his profile pictures from Facebook and Google+ to use as your own on this day of protest.

Vince wishes that there had been an outcry similar to the current blackout during the debate about passing the NDAA, particularly the indefinite detention provisions.  Legislation that restricts our liberty and puts more power in the hands of the government isn’t new.  It is disappointing though.

Please take this opportunity to contact your legislators and complain about this legislation.

We’ll see you in 2012 but first the big announcement!!

I’m going to kick off 2012 with “Casey’s Countdown to Destruction” to celebrate the new year (end of days according to the Mayan calendar.) The plan was for this to already be done and on the feed but alas it didn’t come to be. In fact, I’m not sure sure what I’m counting down yet but I’m leaning toward “Worst End-of-year Countdown Lists.”

This seriously lame-ass way of letting you know how excited we are that Sci Fi Surplus is available on Stitcher Smart Radio is not quite what I had in mind but it will have to do for now. So on with the big announcement!

SciFi Surplus just got easier to access than ever before! If you have an android, iOS, Blackberry or Palm device, chances are you you’ve already got access to the wonderful world of Stitcher Smart Radio. Just search your app store or market for “stitcher” and get access to loads of great content in addition to SciFi Surplus for FREE!

Even if you’re comfortable with the way you’re getting your audio shows, you can do us a solid RIGHT NOW by letting the folks at Stitcher know that you’re a fan of SciFi Surplus. All you need to do is this:

  1. Download the Stitcher app to your device.
  2. Put our code,”scifisurplus”, into the app in the box that asks where you heard about Stitcher.
  3. Listen to any show on Stitcher with your new app.

We also encourage you to tell your friends and neighbors about this and have them do it too. Being perfectly honest with you, we are getting a small kick-back from Stitcher for every activation and the proceeds are going toward doing some really awesome stuff in 2012 for you.

I tend to shy away from things like this if I don’t believe in the product. The Stitcher app is something I feel strongly about because it gets feedcasts into people’s cars instead of idiotic local radio where you can’t listen to geeky topics like ours. The fundamentals are solid here because we’re not very far from a future where you can install apps like this into the dashboard of your car (I’ve already done this with black tape and name-brand hook and loop fasteners).

I’ll talk more about the advantages of Stitcher Smart Radio on the show when we get back for show 203 on January 8, 2012. Spread this word far and wide. Don’t forget to put “scifisurplus” as the referrer when you activate the app on your device and play any one of the thousands of quality shows, including SciFi Surplus.

On the show:

  • Casey: Find out who has been offered the role of Ender Wiggin.
  • Vince: There’s more Doctor Who Chaos than Casey has hands.
  • Casey: Three words — Star Trek Two
  • Vince: Could it be that someone wants to be in the Akira live-action movie?
  • Casey: A Black Friday deal that will blow your mind!
Self serving stuff for show 200. It was a cold day that October afternoon when we first met for SciFi Surplus number one. I’ll save the middle part of the narrative because I don’t remember most of it.
It was 2007.  A simpler time.  The President wasn’t as smart and we had a growing economy precipitously propped up by a housing bubble.  Besides the United States Armed Forces, nobody was occupying nothing.  A tea party was something that little girls did with stuffed animals.  And, Casey’s basement had fewer computers.
